Writing

My first published work appeared in my junior high school newspaper. Of course, it wasn't hard to get published since I was the newspaper editor. Little did I know that step would lead me to more editorial positions later in life.

In the 70's I wrote a book on the art of fired glass decoration and created a book of designs, both published to support my work in the field. I also contributed articles to several trade publications. In the 80's I concentrated on writing articles for a variety of publications and in recent years I've focused on writing for the electronic media, specifically private bulletin board services, public online networks and the World Wide Web.

In 1991 I started writing a book about using the online venues for business. Through my Adventures With Barb series on the Prodigy Network, I shared much of the content from the book and over the years I have found portions of it printed verbatim in other writer's works claimed as their own.  On one hand I'm flattered. On the other, I'm disappointed to see they didn't take the time to really learn about the subject behind the words they claimed. It would be a better world if writers were the real experts many are often credited as being.

It didn't take long for the book market to be flooded with Internet subjects similiar to my business manuscript. I finally decided to incorporate the content in my company's corporate web site and give up on the book. That way, I wouldn't have to worry about the content becoming outdated or someone else being on record as its author. It turned out to be a sound decision. The result has been more business for my company and greater satisfaction for me in hearing directly from my readership.

In 2001 I met a very special person, Jim Arthur. He spent most of his life working for the federal government, assigned to the White House. I found his life so interesting I asked him if he would consider allowing me to write his life story. Shortly after my birthday he agreed it would be a worthwhile project so we have begun to document his adventures.

Meanwhile, I satisfy my writing urge by writing for others from behind the scene, contributing articles to leading information technology and small business publications.
